Osama bin Laden (March 10, 1957 - May 1, 2011), founder of al-Qaeda, was born into a wealthy merchant family in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His father was a construction tycoon with close ties to the Saudi royal family. He received primary and secondary education in Jeddah and later studied economics and business administration at King Abdulaziz University.

When the Gulf Crisis broke out in 1990, bin Laden offered military assistance but was rejected. Saudi Arabia invited U.S. troops to station there, which bin Laden opposed and publicly criticized. In 1991, he left Saudi Arabia under the pretext of going to Pakistan to close his company and settled in Sudan.

In 1993, U.S. troops were ambushed in Somalia, and bin Laden and his fighters claimed responsibility for the attack. Saudi Arabia revoked his citizenship in 1994. After the Taliban took power in 1996, bin Laden returned to Afghanistan, and al-Qaeda began to expand.

On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda planned the shocking "9/11" terrorist attacks, which caused over 3,000 deaths and economic losses of hundreds of billions of dollars.
